One of the most regular concerns caregivers have is, “What is ADHD?” The basic answer is that ADHD means attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. This is a regular problem that affects many toddlers and young adults.

This condition can be found in 3 – 5 % of children according to the National Institute for Mental Health and can end up being as high as 10% of all kids that are old enough to be in school. This doesn’t mean that it is only a ailment that is a concern for our youth.

Recent inquiries have shown that many adults continue to experience ADHD as they progress though life. In fact, this is a standard problem that is often listed as several other problems because doctors tend to no longer look for this ailment as people get older.

This does bring up another concern when you are researching the question, “What is ADHD?” That is what the factors you are checking for when you are trying to diagnose a youth with this ailment.

The first item you must do is to review the inattention symptoms that can appear in the child. This could have symptoms like the fact that they are easily distracted or that they don’t pay attention to the essential details in a daily ritual. In some cases, they will daydream more than the average child as well.

From here, you will need to take the time to look for signs of hyperactivity in the child. Commonly, this will occur when the youth has the inability to sit still for long periods of time. This part of the problem can also stem from excessive talking.

It will also be important to understand that as part of this condition, your little one could also have issues with impatience and will often shout out answers and disturb those around them. Of course, only a healthcare professional can pinpoint your kid having this condition.

Adults will also find that many of the symptoms they experience will be similar. Some of the common things you will want to look for will include chronic lateness, employment problems, procrastination and even regular mood swings. While these are only some of the issues, it will give you a better understanding of what you can expect from this condition.

Now that you have an understanding of what to look for, you will also need to look at the causes of ADHD. For this condition, there have been studies that this is a hereditary condition that can be passed from parents to their toddlers. Along with that, it is might be as simple as chemical balances in the brain and these imbalances will cause brain changes as well.

What you should consider is that there are treatment options for ADHD. As you continue to explore the question, “What is ADHD” more, you can begin to learn the treatments available. Of course, ensure that you do discuss this problem with your doctor and properly have the ailment diagnosed. That way, you can you should make sure that you are correctly treating the right problem, as many other disorders will not be properly treated with ADHD meds.

V K Rajagopalan is a fan who can give you the answers you need to the question, “What is ADHD” including the treatment choices that you have.

Welcome back to the bin, my fellow freaks!

Before I get back to eliminating misconceptions about bipolar disorder, I would like to talk a little bit about words. As a writer, I eat words for breakfast. Language can be powerful. Language doesn`t help us define facts, it MAKES them. Poor little Pluto is not a planet anymore. Why? We SAY it isn`t.

  Whacko. Nutcase. Lunatic. Psycho. Freak.

Those words can be very potent if used maliciously. Some readers might be offended by me talking about folks that suffer from bipolar disorder as whackos. I can understand. Those words can truly hurt. Especially when they come from a “friend.” Trust me. I know.

Just as words can make meaning, they can be meaningless. It depends on 2 things: the individual who’s speaking them and that person’s intent. Here’s an example:

As a writer I spend a large amount of time indoors. I am 1/8th Cherokee, so I’d tan well if I saw the sun more frequently than I do. The rest of my ancestry is Caucasian. In other words, my skin is as white as the driven snow. Now I’m going to say a word and then dive for cover.

  Nigger.

Man… I feel crappy even typing that.

That word was used by white folk to oppress black folk for a very long time, and boy was it a powerful one. It was the neutron bomb of English for a particularly long time. That word was employed to cause shame, which is why I feel positively awful even saying it

Nonetheless, the N-word (sorry I can’t bring myself to type it again) is only a weapon when it’s used like one. Watch any film, go to any club, walk down any street and you`ll hear black people saying it to one another, using it like a term of endearment. It’s OK for them to say it, because they ARE it. For me to say it? Not OK. I`ll doubtless get away with it this one time because my Desire isn`t to harm, but to help. Or at the very least I am hoping I am able to. If not, I sincerely apologize.

Being bipolar, the character of our sickness makes sure that we are an emotional bunch, but let’s try not to be too sensitive about words. They can only harm us if we let them. Let’s start with the word I hate the most:

  Freak.

Freak freak freak freak FREAK FREAK FREAK!!!

If I say that word repeatedly, it stars to sound like gibberish, something I just made up. The more that I use it, the less it means. The less it means the less harm it can do.

Try it for yourself. Pick the one word you detest the most and say it repeatedly. Make that word just as dead as the not-a-planet Pluto. Just don’t forget that your word isn’t dead to everyone . If that word bothers somebody else, don’t say it around them. It is all about kindness, people. It’s that easy.

Well, once more, I am over word count. And I haven’t even discussed one myth, but I may have just dispelled one.

Bipolar Parable 3: “Being bipolar makes you a bad person.”

I`m bipolar. If I’m a bad person, would I go through this much effort to avoid offending the black community? Nope. I’d be screaming the N-word from the rooftops without shame.

There are many out there who are terrified of those of us with bipolar disorder thanks to the actions of a few.Yes, there are some who genuinely are mean, vicious people who are harmful to others. But there are lots more like that who aren`t bipolar. Most of us are the same as you. Some of us, and I am not naming names here, are kind, loving parents who try hard not to not let their daughters see them cry during Disney films.

OK. It’s me. I do that. Pathetic, right? Well this entire article has been about freeing yourself from shame, so I might as well come out of the closet. Disney movies make me cry sometimes. That fact may make me a freak. Having bipolar disorder doesn’t.

Until next time, my fellow freaks keep fighting!

Bipolar disorder is a disease that individuals get diagnosed with. Person with such problem experiences excessive mood swings. He or she may very easily go from happy to angry without a motive. There are severaladditional symptoms that a person with bipolar disorder has. In addition to the moodiness one can possibly have adeficiency of control, unmanageable impulses, small need to get rest are just a couple of examples.

Four forms of disorder I – Type I given for a condition in which a individual has experienced one manic episode and periods where she has been very stressed out

II – Bipolar disorder Type II is a condition where the patient doesn’t experience mania. The patient feels very high energy along with bouts of major depression that typically change from one to another.

III – 3rd type is also referred to as cyclothmia, which is basically the same as Type II, but less extreme.

IV – Type IV bipolar disorder is also generally known as combined disorder. In this type the patient encounters extreme mania and depression at the exact same moment.

Precisely what is mania Mostly mania is meant as a extremely cheery state of being. People are usually joyful and also excited about something. This is not the same for people who have bipolar disorder. For them, it means a period of acting very wildly and also have excessive anger for no reason whatsoever.

Hard to provide treatment It is really quite challenging toprovide a correct diagnosis and treatment to a person who has bipolar symptoms. To get the symptoms managable and also allow the individual to live an ordinary life where he can carry out work and communicate with other people normally, the right dosage of medication need to be consumed. It is very hard to give the accurate amount of medicine, because the symptoms are in a constant state of flux and the treatment should be taken accordingly. Thus getting an accurate medical diagnosis is difficult.

Manic symptoms of bipolar dysfunction The individual usually experiences intense mood swings. He is able to respond to something absolutely overly agitated or display a emotion that isn’t usual for that situation. Also a person in a manic state doesn’t communicate coherently. The sentences might not make any common sense given that scenario. Above all incorrect behavior is typically noticed.

Just what is the danger group This disorder influences about 2% of the US citizens. More youthful individuals get identified more, especially aged in between 18 and twenty four. Also ladies are at higher risk on gaining the disorder. Bipolar disorder is drastically associated with inherited genes. If a single or both of the parents have problems with bipolar symptoms in that case , it’s likely which the child will also possess the syndrome. What is important to understand is that bipolar dysfunction can impact any individual in the world and one requires to be correctly diagnosed with the disease.

Hello again, fellow wackos and electronic rubberneckers!

Hello again, fellow wackos and electronic rubberneckers!

If you are here because you are like me—just a little “off”—then welcome. If you’re here to find out more about bipolar disorder, stick around, because I know a bit and I like to talk. If you’re here to watch the train wreck occur, hoping I’ll melt down and post something wild about the speaking wombats that live in my chiller and their TV viewing habits well, you can doubtless be a little unhappy. I could be a freak, but I’m not crazy.

Yes, that’s correct. I just called myself a freak. I figure if other people are going to call me that, I’m able to potentially get away with claiming it myself. Wacko, nutcase, loony, psycho… There are lots of things people say about bipolar disorder, and a lot of them just are not true. Let’s have a look at a few of those things right now.

Bipolar Myth 1 “Folk with bipolar disorder aren’t truly sick.”

Some people say that bipolar disorder is “all in your head.” They assert stuff like “everyone gets depressed. You only need to suck it up and handle it like everybody else.” If this is correct then diabetes patients just need to get over their illness, too. I mean, too much sugar is not good for everyone, right?

Just as a diabetic’s body doesn't process sugars correctly, someone with bipolar disorder’s brain doesn't process dopamine, serotonin and norepinephrine quite right.

Don’t accept my word for it, though. Take it from research scientists at the University of Michigan who've studied Abnormal Brain Chemistry Found in Bipolar Disorder . They know what they're talking about.

I'm just some freak, remember?

Hence you can tell me I haven't got a “real” illness and I just have to fix it, but first you have got to tell Ms. Diabetic to eat six Twinkies and deal with it. Go ahead. I could call 911 while she's chewing.

This myth is so commonplace that insurance corporations are able to treat it—or more precisely NOT treat it—like it's not a “real” disease. The last health care insurance I had would pay for 80% of the bill if I had to have major surgery, but only 50% if I saw a doctor for bipolar disorder. Also, they limited the amount of times I could see a doctor for treatment to 12 times ever year. Tell you what let’s limit diabetics to 12 insulin shots every year and see how well they do.

What? We shouldn't do that because they could get sick and die?

Well, people with bipolar disorder die, too. Actually without proper treatment, 20% of them commit suicide. That's one in 5, people. I would say that represents a heavy health issue. Maybe this bipolar thing is a genuine illness after all.

Bipolar Myth 2 “Folks with bipolar disorder are beyond hope.”

He's got bipolar disorder. He is mad. He can't be helped. He is a complete waste of time. Or is he?

The fact is—he isn’t. Bipolar disorder is one of the simplest conditions to treat. There are many effective medicines, some of which have been in use for quite some time. Lithium, for example, has been around since the 1950′s. Lithium does not work for everyone, though. That's why there’s Lamictal, Depakote, Zoloft, Tegretol, Wellbutrin, Prozac, Effexor, and a partridge in a pear tree. A psychoanalyst can tinker with medications till he finds a combo that works.

Medications can be helpful but so can just speaking. Talk therapy did me more good than any tablet ever did. However, without the pills, I almost certainly would not have listened to anything when I was at absolute bottom.

The point is this: folks with bipolar disorder CAN be helped. So if you have bipolar disorder or know someone that does, do not give up. There's hope.

Well gang, it looks like I am over word count. I told you I love to talk! We will chat some more next time when I dispel 1 or 2 more legends about bipolar disorder.

So to all my friends and fellow freaks, until next time keep fighting!

Bryce Albertson suffers from bipolar disorder.

In 2005, I worked at a bank’s call center. I liked my job, and I was good at it. I had opened over $250,000 in new accounts that year and been promoted to a supervisor position. Between calls, I had developed an intranet information base that had become vital to operations and there was talk of installing it on each of our 200-plus banks.

I was respected by my bosses and admired by my peers. I was on my way up the corporate ladder. I had the enormous desk in the corner. Everything appeared to be going my way. So why did I feel so empty inside? Why did I never feel a bit like I was adequate? Why did I find myself sitting at my desk one morning crying?

Because I have type II bipolar disorder.

Only I didn’t know it at the time. I only knew that for some unknown reason life just didn’t seem worth the effort. My administrator saw me crying and knew something was wrong. He also knew I had been working diligently and merited a little time off anyway. He instructed me to take some vacation time and relax, dropping the hint that perhaps I should chat with a mental health counselor. I did, and that’s when I was diagnosed.

I’d never considered it before. Aren’t bipolar folks insane and perilous? I may be a small eccentric, but I am not mad. I had never even been THINKING of injuring somebody. Certainly I cannot be bipolar! I knew that SOMETHING was wrong, though, and since I didn’t know what it was, I did not see I had anything to lose by paying attention to a psychiatric doctor. Of course, he is a professional.

I started medication—mood depressant and a mood stabilizer—and did a little reading about bipolar disorder. Lots of what I read sounded a lot like me, but not all of it. I learned that it influenced less than 2% of the people; it was indicated by swapping periods of depression and either mania of hypomania, often with the times of ordinary mood between; it was one of the premiere factors behind homelessness; and that around 20% of those people that have it commit suicide.

Needless to say, learning this statistical data didn’t help my depression at all. In fact, it sent my hysteria levels rocketing. To make things worse, while this was occurring to me, Rigoberto Alpizar was gunned down in Miami Global Airfield for running around, acting mad and saying he had a bomb. He did not, of course. He was just bipolar.

Was that going to happen to me? Would I be one of those people who freaked out and either got themselves finished or snuffed out myself? I had to know, so I read more. What I learned next was more alarming than any of that.

Bipolar disorder, AKA manic depression, is one of the simplest mental diseases to treat.

This reduced my tension level significantly, nonetheless it upset me a lot. If bipolar disorder is so easy to treat, then why do so many folk who have it wind up destitute? Why do so many commit suicides?

I didn’t have lots of time to ponder this. Initially, I was simply too depressed to do anything but lie around like a pile and worry my family. Then, the meds started working. I got to feeling better, and when I had concerns on all of the family needs I had been ignoring, it was time to return to work.

When I returned, everyone was happy to have me back. Well, pretty much everyone. Though management had not related anything about why I was gone, I was not ashamed. It is simply an illness and it’s easily treatable, right? I told a few people, who told a couple more folks, and so on. Pretty soon everyone knew. Most were supportive, but some were not.

To those who knew nothing about my disorder, I was now not the funny guy who everybody liked, the bright guy with the computer skills, and the man who was always pleased to lend a hand. To them, I became the frightful guy who cried at his desk, the threatening wacko who could blow at any moment. To them, I was the freak in the corner, and no discussion could persuade them otherwise. In fact, all of them saw what that one guy did at that airfield.

In the seven years I worked for that bank, I never hurt any person. But that’s enough about me for now. In my next article, I’ll address some of the common misconceptions about bipolar disorder that may have caused my colleagues to think of me that way.

  Until next time, keep fighting.

The Nutcase in the Corner? Oh, that’s the Author; Bryce Albertson. “I have type II bipolar disorder.” – “I had never considered it before.” – “Aren’t bipolar folks crazy and threatening?”

Often stress will manifest when we carry over yesterday’s concerns into our present day concerns. An accumulation will almost always end up in a high stress level. Therefore, we’ve got to be in a position to “dump” all our concerns from the previous day or days and concentrate completely on our today.

So here are 3 stresses busting tips

- Stress Busting Tip 1

Resolve right now to release each thought from yesterday and be only mindful of the now. This thought only…This breath…This moment. Take in three very deep breaths and slowly release every one.

At the same time feel each and every concern, every problem, and each and every unresolved moment, begin to melt. You can handle them at a future time. For now, you are only to be in this very moment.

Now go to your inner quiet place. Go deep within to a place where you feel that you're at peace and then just relax and breathe in awfully and enjoy the feeling of being at one and at peace inside yourself.

Use this special time and place to be calm. Free your mind and body of all worry, all regret, all dissatisfaction, all hate and grief.

- Stress Busting Tip 2

Next, think of one actual act, such as rocking your baby, taking a fast walk, raking the leaves, and do that one easy thing. All of the while, your consciousness is quiet and calm and you are in your own special place inside.

Practice this act of quiet and calm every day and you will see that you are going to attain much more. At the 1st sign of being stressed, return to this mindful, quiet place and start over again till you have reached your inner place of calm.

- Stress Busting Tip 3

The absolute best thing you can do for yourself is to eat, drink and rest “to your fitness!

Stress is simply brought on by not drinking and eating properly. When you aren't getting the number of hours in bed you need each night, you are only setting yourself up for additional stress.

Limit the amount of salt, sugar, caffeine and alcohol in your diet. Drink plenty of clean, pure water every day and do at least moderate exercising each day. This will breathe new life into your skin, hair and will feed all of your vital organs.

Take a bit of time to breathe correctly! Take deep belly breathes to send pure oxygen to all of your body. Giggle and then giggle some more. It is food for the soul! Spend a little time doing the things that please you most. Engage in healthy and fulfilling relationships and work on problems that would erode the closeness that you have with someone special.

When we are content and living a well balanced life everyday stresses appear to appear unimportant in comparison. We are better supplied to deal with the astonishing.

You can gain control today! Isolate only 1 particular stressor in your life and then work on it until you retake control. At the least, have some new hope!

Bipolar disorder, like any form of mental illness, has a hereditary predisposition. If you have an immediate family member who has the mental illness, there is a big chance that you can develop one too. If you think that you may be developing the disorder, it is best that you check with your psychiatrist so that the mental illness can be managed or stopped form its tracks.

Bipolar Disease or Bipolar Disorder is a cyclic illness where people who are suffering from it display episodes of elevated or maniac behavior and depression. These episodes occur in alternating states and can last for anywhere between 3 to 6 months every year.

Jules Baillarger a French neurologist described these extreme mood changes as being merely different phases of the same illness “folli a double forme”, translated as ‘dual-form insanity’.

There are two types of bipolar disorder such as Bipolar I disorder and Bipolar II disorder. The first type involves episodes of severe mood swings, while the second type is a milder form. Cyclothymia is a mild bipolar disorder.

The exact cause of bipolar disorder is not known. However, various genetic, biochemical and environmental factors are supposed to be involved in triggering bipolar disorder. People with bipolar disorder have some physical and chemical changes in the brain.

Neurotransmitters, naturally occurring brain chemicals, contribute in developing bipolar disorder. Hormonal imbalance is also responsible for this disorder. This disease may be due to a combination of multiple genetic and environmental factors.

Now, he is energetic, intensely elated, irritable and self-important. An hour later, he a painful sadness, negative thinking, and indifferent to things that used to bring them happiness. These are the manifestations of people who have a mental disorder called Bipolar Disorder.

A person with Bipolar Disorder has alternating moods of extreme mania and depression. Bipolar disorder is also otherwise referred to as manic-depressive illness. When the patient is in a depressed state, he feels extremely gloomy and negativistic. When he shifts to being manic, the patient can look hyperactive, always on the move and mischievous.

Bipolar disorder is much less common than depression. In North America and Europe, about 1 percent of people experience bipolar disorder during their lives. Rates of bipolar disorder are similar throughout the world. In comparison, at least 8 percent of people experience serious depression during their lives.

Bipolar disorder affects men and women about equally and is somewhat more common in higher socioeconomic classes. At least 15 percent of people with bipolar disorder commit suicide. This rate roughly equals the rate for people with major depression, the most severe form of depression.

Some research suggests that highly creative people-such as artists, composers, writers, and poets-show unusually high rates of bipolar disorder, and that periods of mania fuel their creativity.

There are a lot of well known personalities around the world who has manic depressive disorder. Some are writers and some artists. These famous personalities in history who may have the disorder are painters Amedeo Modigliani and Jackson Pollock, novelists Virginia Woolf and Ernest Hemingway, Lord Byron and Anne Sexton, and composers Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky and Sergey Rachmaninoff. Critics of this research note that many creative people do not suffer from bipolar disorder, and that most people with bipolar disorder are not especially creative.

Depression, also called bipolar disorder, causes extreme mood swings that may last for weeks and even months. Everybody feels happy or sad from time to time. For somebody with manic depression, however, these mood swing are significantly a lot more intense. Scientists have not identified a single element what causes bipolar disorder. Instead, it may have a single or a lot more of many different causes. These could be broken down into genetic, environmental and physiological causes.

There are three kinds of manic depression. Form I is characterized by at least a single manic episode. This can be a feeling of intense elation, restlessness (sufferers through a manic episode may well rest for only three or 4 hrs a night, if in any way), loss of inhibitions and over-activity. Sort II, where there may well be frequent episodes of depression with only mild manic episodes (known as hypomania). Rapid cycling will involve four or more mood swings more than the period of a year. Eventually, there’s cyclothymia, exactly where the mood swings last longer but they are less severe.

Genes are a contributing aspect. If one among your relatives has manic depression, there’s a realistic possibility that you will create it, too. Chromosome numbers six and 8 seem to have already been implicated. Youngsters of bipolar mothers and fathers have an eight per cent possibility of developing the problem, compared with one per cent in the common population. A chemical imbalance within the brain could result in the disorder. Nerve signals travel from a single neuron to one more by way of chemical compounds known as neurotransmitters. These contain norepinehrine, dopamine and serotonin. It really is achievable that a manic episode may well be triggered by excess levels of norepinehrine although in the course of a depressive episode levels of this neurotransmitter may be excessively low. The image, nevertheless, just isn’t that easy, as you’ll find other neurotransmitters involved.

Mood swings may also be caused by pressure. Physical, emotional or sexual abuse, could trigger it. Bereavement or the breakdown of a close romantic relationship may possibly also be a trigger. Not all stressful triggers are damaging experiences. A beneficial transform, such as a marriage or a birth may also make a contribution. As soon as diagnosed, the condition might be handled or controlled, despite the fact that certain risk components may well trigger a recurrence. Failure to comply with medication carries a higher threat of recurrence, as does alcohol or drug abuse. Other risk factors involve poor support systems, i. E., lack of caring pals or relatives or an erratic lifestyle.

Serious depression can cause psychosocial disturbances. For instance, Variety I and Type II are associated using a high absentee rate at work. There is also a higher rate of suicide attempts and hospital admissions with these problems. While each ailments have high rates of attempted suicides, Kind II sufferers seem to have fewer hospital admissions than Sort I, and consequently miss fewer days at function. What causes bipolar disorder seems to be an interplay of genetic and physiological components coupled with stressful triggers. Complying with medication, adopting a stable way of living and building healthy coping techniques may all keep the problem underneath management. It truly is essential to seek advice from a medical expert and not attempt self diagnosis.
