Is Dream Interpretation Biblical?

Prophetic interpretation of dreams is a biblical concept. Various places in the Bible mention something about dream interpretation. If you want to learn how to correctly understand the messages from God hidden in your dreams, it is wise to start from the Bible, written Word of the Lord.

Joseph is called the dream interpreter. He gave some of the most classic examples of dream interpretation in the Bible. Joseph was the youngest son of Israel, who was called Jacob, son of Isaac back in that time. Among the 12 sons, Joseph was the most beloved one of Jacob and that makes all his brothers envious.

Joseph’s adventure began like this. One night Joseph had a dream. He saw himself and his brothers binding sheaves in the field. Then he saw his own sheaf stood up and his brothers sheaves stood around it and bowed to it. Joseph told his brothers about his dreams which had a clear meaning which is that so how his brothers would bow to Joseph someday. His brothers hated that dream and hated him some more.

The next day, Joseph told his brother and his father another dream that he had. The dream goes like this. Joseph saw the sun, the moon and eleven stars all bow to him in the centre. Everybody is angry this time and asked him “do you mean that we all are going to bow to You?” Israel was angry, too, but he thought about the dream for a while.

These two dreams were very important dreams of Joseph which have significant meaning and impact. Because of the two dreams, Joseph’s brothers decided to kill him and eventually sold him to be a slave in Egypt. The dreams were shaping his destiny.

What we can learn from story is that prophetic dreams do exist because we know from the bible that the dreams came true at the end. Sometimes prophetic dreams are easy to interpret. Just like these two dreams, people listened to them immediately reacted which means he knew the meaning behind the dreams. But what we also learn is that the fact that you had a prophetic dream from God does not necessarily mean that you should tell everyone else. Sometimes God meant to give you insights so that you can be humble and obey God. Like Joseph, I think God gave him the dreams to encourage him to endure. But out of pride, Joseph told the dreams and brought terrible results. Sin is really bad.

We must pray for wisdom and revelation for the interpretation of dreams and also for the timing and attitude of telling the meaning of the dream to others. Great is the mystery!
