Can hypnosis really work?
It’s fair to say that hypnosis has its believers and non-believers just like many forms of complimentary therapy. But this is where people are going wrong because by starting hypnotherapy as a non-believer, they are already sabotaging their treatment. This is because, for the most part, hypnosis works by the person being willing to let the process work.
Hypnosis, in the most simplest of terms, works by sending the person into a trance from when then the subconscious part of the brain becomes more receptive. Because hypnosis is used to change the conscious and therefore rational thought processes, it can be used to treat a range of habits and aid psychological problems, including smoking, dieting, fears and stress.
Hypnosis can treat habits such as smoking, biting nails and over-eating (helping to aid weight loss) and also psychological problems such as stress, fears and anxiety. So in order to be treated successfully, the person and their hypnotist need to establish what the goals are going to be. For example, mending a broken bone isn’t possible, but curing anxiety that can help the healing process, is. Hypnotherapy can’t find you new friends, but it can give the confidence to go out there and find them yourself. You get the idea.
Hypnosis won’t work if the person isn’t willing to accept that it will, so it’s kind of a catch-22 situation. It is the willingness to participate, to be able to change what want (whether it’s quitting smoking or losing weight for example) that really shows results. Whether or not hypnotherapy works isn’t down to the hypnotist, but in fact the person being hypnotised. Put simply, the hypnotist is the facilitator and the person being hypnotised that decides whether they succeed or fail.
It must also be said that hypnosis has definitely helped many thousands, potentially millions, of people since it was first used in Ancient Egypt. There’s no reason why it can’t work for you unless if you believe it truly can work. With scientific studies supporting that the brain really does function differently under hypnosis, the image of the therapy is becoming much more respected by medical professionals.
