Projection of Astral Body refers to separation of one’s inner soul or spirit from that of his physical body and projection of the same outwards from the latter into other astral planes or higher realms of consciousness.

It must be noted that though both the above school of thoughts exists, with a fair amount of popularity and belief for both, it is not very clear as to which one actually holds good in case of projection of astral body. While on one hand it is unclear as to whether every physical object has a corresponding astral counterpart, it is also not known whether spirits reincarnate into physical bodies which makes astral projection feasible. For all one knows, the explanation to this phenomenon may be entirely something else.
