How To Keep Your Class From Misbehaving

It does not take long for new students to get used to their new environment, and of course make new friends at the same time. This is a good thing, but just occasionally it can lead to some of them getting a little bit braver and trying to challenge the classroom rules.

There is a way to try to stop this before it gets out of hand and disrupts the whole class. You could rearrange the seating in class. By taking this course of action, you will let your students know that you are in charge and decide where everybody sits in your class.

This is more important if you find that certain students are playing off each other. You must separate them quickly and quietly before they have a chance to turn the class into a free for all.

Do not, if possible, plan your rearranging of seats midway through a lesson, as this can cause disruption too. Plan your seating arrangements at night and put the plan into action on your next lesson.

One deterrent could be to have a spare seat in front of the whiteboard where you sometimes keep your books.

The deterrent is there just in case somebody is misbehaving. In the event of any disruption you can always move the books. You could then threaten to move them into that seat if they persist in their actions.

Any kind of misbehavior can mean that they have to take up the seat at the front of the class as punishment.

The embarrassment of having to sit in front of everybody may be just the tonic to straighten them out and stop any further disruptions.
