How To Make Students Listen While You Lecture

One thing that teachers really can’t stand is when students are talking while they are trying to teach. As a teacher you don’t necessarily need it to be as quite as a library but you do need to have your lessons heard throughout the room.

Here’s a guide to help you out if you have tried to get your students to quit talking during a lesson and have not had good results. These tools will have you prepared for the next time this happens to you.

The cold stare is a good one – Pick out the nosiest student at the time and give him/her your best cold icy stare. The trick here is to hold it as long as you have to until the child stops talking. Other students in the class will notice and quiet down as well.

Don’t make a face at them, just give a blank stare that lets them know that they are bothering you and being rude. This should do the trick nicely.

Offer them the floor – Another good way to shut up a student is to ask them if they want to share what they are talking about with the class. They are most likely talking about something they think is more important than the lesson but don’t want an audience to hear about it.

In offering to allow the student to share the conversation with everyone the student is going to immediately clam up and regret the fact that he/she disturbed the lesson in the first place. The other students are going to take note of your actions in this situation and most likely quiet down as well.

Give the whole class extra homework – As a punishment to the talkative student assign the entire class an extra page of homework. This will have an effect on the entire class for this students actions and this alone will pressure the talkative student into being quite as well as making the other students realize the importance of respect.

There are some teachers that don’t like the idea of this but you aren’t punishing them with the homework itself just the extra homework.
